Dr. Melendez is a board-certified ophthalmologist and served in the U.S. Air Force/New Mexico Air National Guard and completed his term of service as a Lieutenant Colonel and a flight surgeon. He served in many leadership positions and has always been passionate about contributing to helping others. He started a foundation named after his mother called “The Juliette RP Vision Foundation Juliette” (JulietteFoundation.org). This non-profit organization aims to help find a cure for a blinding eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which his mother was diagnosed with when he was a young boy. This inspired him to pursue a career as a physician and continue his education after medical school to become an eye surgeon.
He worked in a very busy ophthalmic practice for 16 years and was challenged to offer a better way to provide care for his patients and decided to open his practice, which he calls the Juliette Eye Institute (JulietteEye.com). He focuses on helping patients see at their very best while using the most advanced technologies to correct and restore a person's vision without needing glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Melendez is also a full professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he has been teaching medical students for over 18 years on the importance of high-quality patient care, understanding the business of medicine, and giving back to the next generation by mentoring.
